“LEVEL’s Training Method”

Our goal is for rapid success for the owner/parent and the pup to move up relatively quickly in all levels…ideally, in approximately 3-4 sessions while making the For Paws Canine Obedience Training experience fun and interesting.

ORIENTATION

Everyone attends orientation. This is the first class for all levels of training. You can bring your pup to the orientation. We become familiar with you, your goals and your dog. Also, we talk about the “Level’s Training Method”, the benefits of having flexible schedules so that you’re not obligated to be at your class on the same day and time every week. Also, if you choose to do so, you have the opportunity to attend more than one class each week. Additionally, you can jump back into other levels if you feel you need to catch up or refresh commands and exercises.

PUPPY CULTURE

“The impact we have on training and socializing our puppies starts at age 8 to 16 weeks”

• Socialization – this is the first step of having your pup interact with other dogs and people, (this is one of the most important experiences and exposures you can provide for your new pup)

• The inner world of our new puppies and how to communicate with them

• Understanding the boundaries of the development period

• Attention getting – reward your pup for their attention (how to use treats and attention as a reward)

• Luring your pup into positions without using verbal commands – (your pup should repeat the position a number of times prior to ever using a verbal command)

• Clicker or marker training your pup

• Name Game/Focus – The basis and top priority for all commands and exercises for a well-mannered dog

• Sit, down, crate training, getting use to the leash, eliminate jumping, biting and chewing are some to the commands and exercises we will work on in this class.

*Our goal is to have you excel to Level-1 after 3 to 4 weeks of Puppy Culture Classes

LEVEL - 1

• Focus is a top priority, the key behavior from which other behaviors build

• Mechanics of Leash Walking

• Attention game – reminding owners to reward for attention as they use their name

• Begin teaching the stay command after a solid sit and down is established

• If it still exist, we eliminate jumping, biting, chewing and off furniture and other objects

• In your crate and in your place command

• Down - Developing the down command

• Sit by my side or by me - using a lure is ok, sloppy sits are ok (starting from a sit in front of you position).

• Stay – We start working on the stay command and understanding the difference between wait and stay

LEVEL – 2

• Begin teaching stay with duration and distance, (a couple feet away, for 5 to 10 seconds)

• Focus with distractions – this exercise continues through all levels of training

• Sit by my side or by me - using very little luring and start eliminating treats

• Learn the 4 different sit positions - front, right, left and by my side

• Wait/Stay – start working on the wait command; know the difference between wait and stay

• Off the floor down – we should be able to have our pups go to the down position as we are standing completely up right

• Release – start having your pup release or give up objects/things to you, (toys, balls, etc.)

• Begin Loose Leash Walking techniques

• Take it or OK - your pups should wait for treats form your hand, for his food bowl as you place it in front of him/her (in general, wait for everything when you ask them to do so)

• Have your pup sit before you go out the door, before you come in the door, as you go for walks, have your pup sit every 5 feet

LEVEL – 3

• Focus with your dog 6 feet from you – while holding your dog’s focus up to 30 seconds

• Come/recall – have your pup come to you as you call him/her, on and off leash

• Sit aby my side or by me - on verbal or hand signal (no torso movement or other overt body language)

• 30-second stay while standing next to your pup, (we start eliminating treats, praise is okay)

• Down on verbal or hand signal (no torso movement or other overt body language)

• Loose Leash Walking, no pulling, lunging, but still using treats and being able to go across the room with no tension in the leash

• Leave it – this command will teach your pup to leave anything you do not want them to have

• Around - start working on having your dog walk around objects

• Start walking past other dogs on a loose leash

• Your pup should start sitting when you walk up to someone, or as they approach you, additionally, you want to have them sit automatically anytime you stop walking

LEVEL – 4

• The goals for Level – 4 are to continue improving on all obedience commands and training, using less treats and lures

• Focus with your dog 10 feet from you – while holding your dog’s focus up to 1 minute, we will also start adding in many more distractions during this exercise

• Achieve loose leash control by praising and repeating cues – being able to walk for a distance without tension on the leash

• Working on distance, duration and distraction with your pup in sit and stay, and sit and down position, calling your pup to you from a distance while in a sit and wait position

• The challenge of working close to other pups in the class, while performing all commands and exercises including loose leash walking 2 feet away from other dogs

• Start and complete the process of practicing and preparing for the “AKC Canine Good Citizenship” and the “Alliance of Therapy Dog” testing and observing certification

• To prepare for the above CGC and ATD, we incorporate major distraction into your pups training – teaching them to get use to wheelchairs, crutches and having others approach and walk unsteady towards and around them

• Separating you and your pup for 3 minutes – having one of the other parent/owners in the class control your pup while you leave the room
